Any abnormal condition of the skeletal muscles is called myopathy. Myopathy can be the result of disease, neurological disorders or a number of other ailments.
The term 'myopathy' comes from the Greek words 'myo,' meaning 'muscle,' and 'pathos,' meaning 'suffering.' It is used to describe muscular problems within the muscle and does not encompass diseases or ailments of the nerves or brain.
Myositis is a common form of myopathy where the muscles become inflamed for no apparent reason. This type of myopathy is thought to be an autoimmune response.
Myopathy can be hereditary or acquired. The type of myopathy affecting a person is determined based on the age of onset.
