Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, and he died the next morning. It was Booth's second attempt to harm Lincoln. The first attempt, a kidnap plot that Booth tried a month earlier, failed because Lincoln did not appear where he was expected.
Lincoln was in a private box at Ford's Theatre with his wife and friends, where they were seeing the comedy "My American Cousin," when actor Booth, a Confederate loyalist, shot Licoln in the back of the head at 10:15 p.m. Booth escaped by jumping to the stage and fleeing on a broken leg, shouting "Sic semper tyrannis!" He was captured and killed on April 26. Four fellow conspirators were also captured and executed on July 7, 1865.
