The most abundant gas in the atmosphere is nitrogen. It accounts for 78 percent of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and is the most common natural element on Earth.
The atmosphere is composed of several gases, including nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. These gases cannot be depleted due to their abundance in nature. Nitrogen is found in all living organisms and is responsible for the function of genetic materials such as amino acids, DNA and RNA. Nitrogen also is essential for the creation of new life through the nitrogen cycle, which involves the consumption of nitrogen-rich organic matter, decomposition of organisms into soil and absorption by plant life.
