Three of the most abundant proteins in human blood plasma are albumins, globulins and fibrinogen. Albumins and globulins are actually two separate families, or groups, of proteins.
Many types of proteins in the blood serve different functions within the circulatory system:
- Serum albumin accounts for more than 50 percent of blood protein. It is produced in the liver and transports hormones, fatty acids and bilirubin throughout the body.
- Globulins are the second-most abundant protein in the body and while some are produced in the liver, others are produced in the immune system. Globulins make up nearly 40 percent of blood protein and are used to transport nutrients throughout the body..
- Fibrinogen helps with blood clot formation and constitutes less than 10 percent of the proteins in blood plasma.
