In the midst of the Great Depression in 1936, Paul D'Amour used a family loan to purchase the Y Cash Market in Chicopee, Massachusetts for $2,500, and Big Y was born. The store enjoyed immediate success, and it tripled in size by 1940. D'Amour continued to be involved in the company's day-to-day operations until his death in 1991. As of May 2015, Big Y is one of the largest independent supermarket chains in the New England states.
