The White House is not in a state. It is located in Washington, D.C. The District of Columbia is a federal district that Congress established in the late 1700s with land Virginia and Maryland donated for the purpose of serving as home to the nation's capital.
The physical address of the White House is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Construction of the White House on this site began in 1792, and President and Mrs. John Adams were its first residents in 1800. The residence had to be rebuilt following a fire in 1814 during the War of 1812. The South Portico was added in 1824 and the North Portico in 1829. Prior to 1800, the President's House was located in Philadelphia, Penn., at Market and Fifth Streets.
