Where is the adrenal gland located?

The adrenal gland is located on top of the kidney. There are two adrenal glands, one for each kidney. They are triangular-shaped glands that produce hormones and are part of the body's endocrine system.

The adrenal gland has two parts: the cortex and the medulla. The medulla is the inner core of the adrenal gland and secretes adrenaline, or epinephrine, and norepinephrine into the bloodstream. These hormones help the body cope with sudden stresses.

The cortex, which is controlled by the pituitary gland, secretes steroids, such as cortisone and hydrocortisone. These steroids help balance the levels of salt and sugar in the bloodstream.
