Where do African elephants live?

African elephants, the largest land animals on Earth, are found in sub-Saharan Africa. These elephants live in a range of climates on the African continent, from the Sahel desert in Mali to the rain forests of central and West Africa.

African elephants live in family herds of up to 20 individuals, with each family herd being led by a matriarch. Male elephants of breeding age are typically shunned; they travel with a bachelor herd until breeding season arrives or roam alone. African elephants are herbivorous, and adults can consume up to 300 pounds a day of leaves, fruit and other vegetation.
