Individuals are able to sign up for Medicare drug coverage when they are 65 years old; however, when the coverage actually starts varies based on the sign up date, as stated by the official Medicare website. People who sign up the month they turn 65 can start drug coverage a month after signing up. Individuals who sign up during the general enrollment period receive coverage on July 1st.
As of February 2015, the general enrollment period for Medicare drug coverage runs from January 1st to March 31st.
If someone under 65 is considered permanently disabled, he or she is able to sign up for both Medicare health and drug coverage.
