What age do you need to be to start kindergarten in Texas?

Texas children must reach the age of 5 by September 1 of the target kindergarten entry year. Texas law provides an exception for children younger than 5 to enter kindergarten early, however.
If a child in Texas is younger than 5 but is also able to perform well on an assessment normally given in third grade and the school district has a policy in place allowing for early admission into kindergarten, he might be able to attend kindergarten prior to reaching age 5. Parents who believe their child falls into this category should speak to the school district to learn more.
