The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is an agency that helps to pay electric bills. The agency offers financial assistance to cover home energy costs for low-income families.

LIHEAP is a federally funded program that provides assistance with the costs of energy bills, energy emergencies and energy-related home maintenance. The agency provides families with critical help to prevent unsafe heating or cooling emergencies that compromise the health and welfare of residents. In order to be eligible, a family’s gross income needs to be at or below 150 percent of the poverty level, as of 2015. LIHEAP reserves the right to deny funding to individuals living in non-subsidized houses or those unable to pass an assets test.
