AirDrop is a proprietary technology used by Apple to wirelessly share content between two nearby Apple devices. It was introduced in OS X Lion in 2010 and used exclusively to share files between Macs. It was later adopted in iOS 7 to share files between iPhones, iPads and iPods.

With the release of OS X Yosemite in late 2014, iOS devices and Macs could share data with one another. AirDrop is available on Macs in the Finder by pressing "shift" + "cmd" + "R," and in iOS devices via the Control Center. AirDrop for Mac requires a WiFi connection, whereas the iOS implementation requires WiFi or bluetooth.
