What is an Alabama EBT card?

An Alabama EBT card is a debit card that the state of Alabama issues to qualifying citizens and to which the state transfers the benefit money to those citizens. EBT stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources holds that EBT cards make the dispersal of benefits easier and faster. The state Family Assistance and the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are electronically placed on this debit card. EBT cardholders get cash benefits via ATMs and certain store terminals, and they use the cards at grocery stores to buy food. The EBT system began in 1997.
