Does alcohol kill ticks?

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol may be used to dispose of a tick after it has been removed from its host. Ticks can be detached safely using a fine pair of tweezers, after which the affected skin area needs to be disinfected with alcohol.
HowStuffWorks.com discourages pouring alcohol on a tick when it is still attached to its host, since this may cause the insect to regurgitate and release toxic or infectious substances into the bloodstream. Victims should retain the tick in case it is useful to diagnose any potential disease that develops after the bite.
