Where are the Algonquian Indians from?

The Algonquian Indians, a linguistic group made up of separate tribes, generally came from the New England region and the northeast seaboard of North America. This is why they were the first native groups encountered by the English when they landed at Jamestown and began exploring the territory nearby.

The Algonquian name comes from similarities between the languages of several separate tribes. These are known as Algonquin languages. Among these tribes, the Powhatan Indians lived in the area immediately alongside Jamestown; the Pequots and Narragansetts lived in New England; and the Leni Lenape natives lived in the area that later became known as Penn's Woods.
