Almond milk is a non-dairy product made from ground almonds and water. Used as a dairy substitute, almond milk is free of cholesterol and lactose and is a suitable product for vegans and vegetarians.
Almond milk can be purchased at supermarkets and specialty food stores, and it comes in plain, vanilla and chocolate flavors. It can also be made at home by pulverizing almonds together with water in a blender.
Until recently, almond milk was mostly a niche food item found only in specialty food stores. In 2013, almond milk surpassed soy milk as the most popular plant-based milk in the United States.
