Cardiac perfusion scans, echocardiograms and computerized tomography angiograms are some alternate tests for heart blockages, according to WebMD. A heart blockage, or coronary heart disease, occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries, and the narrowed arteries restrict blood flow to the heart, explains MyHeart.net.

During a cardiac perfusion scan, a physician injects a radioactive tracer into the patient’s bloodstream and uses a camera to detect areas of poor blood flow, states WebMD. An echocardiogram generates images of the heart using sound waves, and a computerized tomography angiogram takes an X-ray image of the heart and surrounding arteries, explains Mayo Clinic.
