The term American bandogge has also been used to refer to American pit bull terrier - Neopolitan mastiff crosses, or to other mixes of bully type breeds with mastiff-type breeds. Some breeders are working to establish the bandogge as an actual breed rather than a mix. The term "bandog" historically was used to describe a dog that was kept chained up during the day and then released to act as a guard dog at night.
