American holly trees are ornamental broad-leaf evergreen trees displaying clusters of red berries in the fall and winter months. The trees grow 40 to 50 feet tall in a pyramidal shape with a span of 18 to 40 feet wide.
American holly trees come in over 1,000 different cultivators, with differences in the appearance of the fruit and the foliage. Holly trees come in both male and female, with both required in the same vicinity for fruit production. The trees grow best with at least four growing in the same area.
Birds and mammals find American holly trees attractive for both shelter and food. Many birds eat the berries, but the berries are considered slightly toxic to humans.
