The American hornbeam tree, or Carpinus caroliniana, is a low-maintenance, slow-growing understory tree that exhibits good fall color. It is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 9.
The American hornbeam tree grows 20 to 35 feet high with a spread of 20 to 35 feet and is native to eastern North America. It grows best in full to partial shade and moist, rich soils. The American hornbeam tree has white insignificant blooms on the female trees, while males trees produce green blooms. Fall colors include yellow, red and orange. The tree is prone to twig blight, leaf spots and cankers.
