Where can you find hornbeam trees?

The approximately 40 species of hornbeam trees are mostly found in northern China, but they are also found in other northern regions in Asia. Outside of Asia, two of the species are found in Europe, and one in North America.

There are two subspecies of the American hornbeam, the Caroliniana and the Virginiana. The Caroliniana is found in the eastern portion of the United States. The Virginiana grows mainly in the Appalachian Mountains but can be found as far west as Minnesota. Hornbeam trees traditionally grow underneath taller trees, such as oaks and maples, and along streams. They also have bluish-gray bark and hairy, green fruits.
