How do anacondas breathe?

Anacondas breathe through nostrils positioned just above their snouts. This placement is important to their predatory habits, as they can breathe while mostly submerged under water before sneaking up on their prey. Once in striking distance, they spring from the water to wrap around their prey and suffocate them.

Some species of anacondas are able to stay underwater without taking a breath for about 10 minutes. This ability allows for swift navigation through the waters and even more stealth feeding maneuvers. Anacondas do occasionally go onto land to catch their prey, but they prefer remaining in or near the water.
