For what is an analytical balance designed?

An analytical balance is designed to measure the mass of substances to a high degree of precision. These scales read masses to within 0.0001 gram.
Fingerprints add mass. For this reason, a tare container should never be picked up with bare hands when using an analytical balance. Instead, Kimwipes or tongs should be used to place and remove the container from the apparatus. The mass of the container should be recorded. Avoid leaning on the laboratory bench while weighing the substance. When adding the substance to be weighed, do not expect to reach an exact mass. To clean an analytical balance, use a brush to wipe away any spills.
