What animal does lard come from?

Lard comes from pigs. It is actually the rendered fat of the animal, and different kinds of lard come from different parts of the animal.

Lard was commonly used for baking and frying in the first half of the 20th century. According to a Huffington Post article, many professional chefs still use it because it is better than butter for creating flaky crusts; also, some chefs cook with it because it includes parts of the pig that may not be used otherwise. Processed lard does not taste like pork; instead, it is somewhat nutty in flavor and white in color.
