The animals that are depicted on the National Emblem of India include lions, a horse and a bull. The Indian National Emblem is a reproduction of the Sarnath Lion Capital in Uttar Pradesh, which was built by Emperor Ashoka around the third century B.C.
The replica of the Lion of Sarnath was designated as the National Emblem of India on January 26, 1950. The state insignia comprises three Asiatic lions that are standing back to back, representing courage, power and confidence. The lions rest on top of a circular base, with the Dharma Chakra engraved in the middle, flanked by a bull and a galloping horse. The phrase "Satyameva Jayate," meaning "truth alone triumphs," is etched below the symbol.
