The national bird of Guatemala is the resplendent quetzal, which is also known as the Guatemalan quetzal. The bird is sacred throughout Central America, and ancient Aztecs and Mayans wore the feathers of the birds during ceremonies. Guatemalan currency is also named for the bird.
Quetzals live in the rain forests of Central America but are being threatened by deforestation. They are brightly colored birds. The males are typically more colorful than females and are known for their long tail feathers. Quetzels grow to about 3 feet in length, including their long tails. They are omnivores that feed on both plants and animals.
