Animals that eat only plants are known as herbivores. These animals eat a variety of plants and seeds to obtain both nutrition and energy. Examples of herbivores include grasshoppers, deer and rabbits.
Herbivores are one type of consumers in an ecosystem. Other types include omnivores and carnivores. Omnivores eat both plant matter and animal or organic matter. Carnivores eat only animals and never eat plants. All three of these general types of consumers can be broken down into more complex and intricate classifications, and they all work together in an ecosystem to recycle nutrients and keep plant and animal populations thriving.
