The consumer that only eats animals is called a carnivore. Carnivores are secondary consumers and they eat the animals that eat the plants.
A producer is a plant that makes its own food and food for other creatures. A producer is sometimes called an autotroph, and an animal that eats this plant is called a herbivore. A herbivore is a primary consumer.
After the herbivore eats the plant, it may be eaten by a carnivore. Then, the carnivore may be eaten by a third or tertiary consumer, usually a larger carnivore.
Examples of primary consumers include giraffes, hippos and zebras. The carnivores that eat these primary consumers include lions, hyenas and tigers.
