Antarctica is considered a desert because the region receives little rain and snowfall. Antarctica is made up of glaciers, icebergs and ice shelves and has no bushes or trees.
Antarctica is so cold that people can live there for only short periods of time. There are six months of daylight during the summer and six months of darkness in the winter. Tourists typically visit Antarctica in the summer to view the whales, and scientists go there to study the ice. Antarctica has an average temperature in the winter of minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the coldest place on Earth.
