What is anti-apartheid?

The anti-apartheid movement was an international response to the formalized discrimination policies of the National Party in South Africa, known as apartheid. The movement grew out of the boycott of South African goods that began in Great Britain in 1960.

Under apartheid policies, Africans in South Africa were deprived of land ownership, received less pay and only had access to inferior health and education services. The boycott that began in protest of apartheid policies escalated to an anti-apartheid movement following the shooting of 69 unarmed Africans by the South African police. The Africans were protesting the discriminatory policies of the government.
