What year did Apartheid start?

Apartheid began in 1948 in South Africa, and was put to an end in 1994. Apartheid was a systemic form of racial segregation that was enacted and enforced through legislation by the National Party.

In 1950, the government in South Africa banned marriages between white and black people. Another series of laws, referred to as the land acts, set aside 80 percent of the land in the country for the white minority population. Those who were non-white were required to carry and display documentation when they were in restricted areas. Nelson Mandela, who was released from prison in 1990, worked to end apartheid.
