What antibiotic is used to treat cat bites?

Some common antibiotics used to treat cat bites are oral combinations of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid with the brand name Augmentin, combination injections of ampicillin and sulbactam with the brand name Unasyn, and an intravenous version of ampicillin. This is an off-label use of these antibiotics, according to WebMD.

"Off-label" means that the Food and Drug Administration did not approve the drug specifically for use on cat bites. Each of these antibiotics requires a prescription, explains WebMD. The oral versions of Augmentin include tablets, extended-release tablets and liquids for patients too young for a pill. The primary use of all antibiotics is to fight bacterial infections.
