Approximately 5 percent of the population have liver cysts, according to Cleveland Clinic, but only 5 percent of those affected ever develop symptoms. The symptoms include abdominal fullness, discomfort and pain, and larger liver cysts can be felt through the abdomen, states the American Liver Foundation.
Liver cysts are abnormal, fluid-filled sacs in the liver. The cause of the majority of liver cysts is unknown. Some cysts are present at birth, while others are acquired later. Sheep-borne parasites are a known cause for some cysts. The majority of liver cysts are benign, but in rare cases, they lead to liver failure and cancer, the American Liver Foundation explains.
