Ken Follett wrote his first bestseller, “The Eye of the Needle,” in 1978. His next four books, all spy thrillers, were also bestsellers. “The Pillars of the Earth," a historical novel set in the Middle Ages, was on the New York Times bestseller list for 18 weeks, reached number one on multiple international lists and remained on the German list for six years.
