The aorta is an artery that originates from the heart, beginning at the top of the left ventricle. The heart pumps blood from the left ventricle into the aorta by way of the aortic valve.
The aorta is the largest vessel in the human body. It transports oxygenated blood to each organ in the body. The size of the aorta is proportionate to the person’s height and weight. It can range from 3 centimeters to 1.2 centimeters. The aorta is divided into seven sections: the aortic valve, aortic root, ascending aorta, aortic arch, descending thoracic aorta, abdominal aorta and thoracoabdominal aorta.
