Becoming a flight attendant requires completing high school, obtaining a passport and applying directly to the airline. Before you are hired, you must pass a background check. After securing the approvals, the airline provides the training you need. Time to complete the process depends on the applicant's current education.
- Complete your education
Airlines require that new hires complete high school or obtain a GED certificate. Some airlines prefer applicants that have some college and experience in customer service.
- Apply for a passport
If you do not already have a valid passport, you need one before applying. If you do not have a passport and this is your first application, the U.S. Department of State requires you apply in person.
- Apply to the airline
Each airline hires directly, and there are no airline attendant schooling requirements until the airline hires the applicant. The process requires the applicant undergo a background check. The law requires applicants be at least 18 and eligible to work in the United States.
- Complete the new employee training
The airline is responsible for training each flight attendant. The course lasts three to six weeks.
- Complete the proficiency exam
Once the attendant completes the course, the Federal Aviation Administration administers a proficiency exam. Candidates that pass the exam become certified flight attendants.
