To find the area of a rhombus, divide the rhombus into two equal triangles, calculate the area of one triangle, then multiply by 2. Use a pen, ruler, divider, piece of paper and calculator to complete this task in just a few minutes.
- Divide the rhombus into triangles
Draw the fast diagonal to divide the rhombus into two equal triangles. Assign the triangles labels A and B. Draw the second diagonal that passes through the center of the first diagonal.
- Measure the rhombus
Stretch the divider, and measure the first diagonal. Transfer the divider to a ruler, and read the measurement. Record it on the piece of paper. This is the base of triangles A and B. Do the same to find the value of the second diagonal. Divide the value of the second diagonal by 2 to get the height of either triangle.
- Calculate the area of the rhombus
Using a calculator, multiply the base of triangle A by its height, and divide the product by two to get the area of triangle A. Because triangle A is equal to triangle B, multiply the area of triangle A by 2 to get the area of the rhombus in question.
