Which argument wins in the debate of evolution vs. natural selection?

Evolution and natural selection are not on opposing sides of a debate. Rather, the theory of evolution maintains that shifting gene frequency is the result of natural selection. Natural selection, far from being contrary to evolution, is the main mechanism driving the evolution of species.
The discovery of natural selection was the great innovation of Darwin's theory. Before him, other naturalists had suspected the plasticity of species, but they were generally unsuccessful in describing the mechanism by which populations fitted themselves to their environments. Natural selection, the preferential survival of organisms that are well adapted to their environment at the expense of the less fit, eventually proved to be the most accurate explanation of evolution's ability to shape gene pools.
