The Armed Forces Service Medal is awarded to active service members who serve in a "significant activity" and do not encounter armed opposition or imminent danger. It was created on Jan. 11, 1996, under President Bill Clinton.

To qualify for the medal, military personnel must be members of a unit that participates with the operation inside the area of eligibility for at least one day. Theater commanders decide whether an operation meets the criteria for the medal. The medal depicts a torch similar to the Statue of Liberty's on the obverse side. On the reserve side is an eagle, adapted from the seal of the Department of Defense.
