One fact about Vestal Goodman is that she founded the Happy Goodman Family music group along with her husband, Howard Goodman. Vestal was the fourth of six children and began her performing career by singing for her home church.

Vestal Goodman was born in 1929 and performed as a gospel singer for more than half a century. Goodman was known as "The Queen of Southern Gospel Music" and was known for holding her trademark handkerchief during most performances. Vestal Goodman released an autobiography in 1999. She died in 2003 of complications from influenza while vacationing in Florida with her family. Goodman was posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame a year after her death.
