The "Rumble Fish" novel, by author S.E. Hinton, takes place in the late 1960s or early 1970s, during the Vietnam War. The setting is in Southern California.
"Rumble Fish" is a young adult novel featuring a young male protagonist named Rusty-James. Rusty-James is considered the toughest street fighter in his group of high school friends, and he's used to relying on his older brother, Motorcycle Boy, to bail him out whenever he gets into trouble. However, when Rusty-James and his brother try to save some "rumble fish" from a pet store, Rusty-James gets caught in a whirlwind of events that Motorcycle Boy can no longer save him from.
