What is Artemisinin used for?

Artemisinin is a drug derived from the sweet wormwood plant that treats malaria in many regions of the world. Artemisinin-based combination therapy, or ACT, is a first line of defense for the treatment of uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria, according to the World Health Organization.

The World Health Organization recommends ACT because it is highly effective, acts fast and reduces the likelihood of the development of drug resistance, explains the Malaria Consortium. As of 2015, scientists at the University of Washington also study the effectiveness of artemisinin as a cancer treatment because it may selectively kill cancer cells, according to News-Medical.net.
