What is the AST/SGOT blood test?

The AST blood test is a test used to measure the amount of the enzyme aspartate aminotransferase, or AST in the blood. This enzyme was formerly referred to as serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, or SGOT, as stated by WebMD.

The test is usually carried out to determine if there is a problem with the liver. High levels of AST in the blood indicate that there is damage to the liver. The test may be carried out alongside the test for alanine aminotransferase, or ALT. Both of these tests are used together to identify which organ is damaged. It is important to inform the doctor of any medications currently being taken prior to the test.
