Eric Blair wrote the book "1984," or "Nineteen Eighty-Four," under the pen name "George Orwell." Blair was an Englishman who had long written under the pseudonym; it appears on the cover of every book he published in his lifetime. "1984" was Blair's last book; he died shortly after its publication.
Blair wrote the bulk of "1984" in an isolated cabin on the remote Scottish island of Jura from 1946 to 1949. He had been plagued by respiratory ailments all his life. The harsh climate in Jura worsen his condition. Blair fell ill with TB, and he died on Jan. 21, 1950.
