Some of the key themes from "1984" by George Orwell include the dangers of totalitarianism, psychological manipulation and physical control. Other themes are technology and the control of information and history.

Disturbed by the extreme examples of cruelty and oppression exhibited by communist countries during his time, Orwell depicts a radical totalitarianism government in "1984." In the novel, the government watches and controls every part of human life. When the protagonist acts to challenge the government, he discovers that its power is beyond what he thought possible. The techniques that the government uses to control people are part of the other themes in the book.
