The first automated teller machine was invented in 1967 by John Shepherd-Barron, a Scottish inventor. He had a revelation that if vending machines could dispense candy, they could also dispense money. His first ATM was installed at the London bank Barclays.
The first ATM in the United States was designed by Donald Wetzel. His first ATM was installed at Chemical Bank on Long Island in September 1969. It took lots of advertising gimmicks to get customers to try the machines at first. It wasn't until 1977 that they started to be widely used. As of 2014, there are almost 2 million ATMs around the world.
