The x-ray machine was invented in November of 1895 by German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen. X-rays are used extensively for medical imaging of bones, teeth and organs.
The x-ray machine was accidentally invented by Rontgen. According to the Scientist magazine, the first radiology department was set up in a Glasgow hospital within a year of this discovery.
According to University of North Carolina, x-rays allow doctors to look directly through tissues and see broken bones, cavities and swallowed objects with ease. The discovery of x-rays earned Rontgen a Nobel Prize for Physics in 1901.
