Avascular necrosis of the hip refers to the death of hip bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply, according to Mayo Clinic. Occurring most often in men ages 30 to 60, avascular necrosis of bones is linked to long-term use of steroid medication and excessive alcohol consumption.
Also called osteonecrosis, avascular necrosis of the hip can lead to hairline breaks in the hip bone that cause the bone to collapse eventually, according to Mayo Clinic. In the early stages, there are often no symptoms of avascular necrosis. As the disease advances, putting weight on the affected hip, and later, lying down, can cause pain.
