Americans between 25 and 34 have mean 401(k) balances of $24,378, those between 35 and 44 have $65,767, those 45 to 54 have $124,287 and workers between 55 and 64 have $186,404. However, the mean exceeds the median in all age groups which indicates that high-income earners skew the mean balances up.
