As of 2014, the average Fidelity IRA balance was approximately $10,000 for investors aged 20 to 29 and approximately $180,000 for investors aged 70 and older, reports Fidelity. On average, IRA account balances rose by more than 30 percent between 2010 and 2013, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

Between 2012 and 2013, investors aged 50 to 59 increased their IRA investments by 9.8 percent, the greatest percentage increase for any age range, to reach an average account balance of $83,100, notes Fidelity. Investors aged 20 to 29 increased their IRA investments by 3 percent, for an average account balance of $9,600.
